Message from the President

Welcome to the 2nd Annual OCAD University Alumni Exhibition! Works of art are the most complex and diverse products of human achievement, while at the same time being perhaps the purest form of communication. Therefore, the challenge of curating an exhibition of this nature is indeed daunting. My thanks first of all to Amanda McKinney (BFA, 2007) and Tony Taylor (AOCAD, 2004), who have devoted their time, knowledge and enthusiasm to the demanding role of chairing the 2012 Alumni Exhibition, and to OCAD U Alumni Relations Assistant, Megan Skyvington (BFA, 2011) for her dedicated administrative work in support of this initiative, and endless gratitude to all Alumni Council members for consistently volunteering their time, ideas, and humour, throughout the year. This support is very much a part of what has made this year’s Exhibition a great success. Lastly a huge β€œThank You” to all our alumni artists and designers for bringing us their amazing creations.
Knowing I that belong to this talented and diverse community of artists and designers β€” who have enriched Canada and beyond for 135 years β€” gives me goose bumps. Iβ€˜ve always referred to it as The Art College, for you it may be OCA, OCAD or OCAD University β€” what has never changed is the fusion of ideas, innovation and energy that is ever-present at 100 McCaul. So many artists, designers and makers of treasure have practised at this incredible institution of the imagination, and this show allows you a select peek at 60 original works by artists who have made their way in all walks of life. Wherever you go to enjoy art, keep an eye out for OCAD University alumni. Their work is consistently among the finest to be found anywhere. It is with great pleasure that I extend my congratulations to each of the 40 exhibitors whose work was selected for our show. We anticipate exponential growth of the Alumni Exhibition with the vision of it becoming one of Toronto’s hottest cultural events.
Sincerely, Maggie Broda BA, OCT. President, OCAD University Alumni Association

Message from the Curator

Sitting in as a silent observer on a jurying process is quite the experience. The criteria for selection? Creativity, originality, and solid technical skills in over 300 works submitted by OCA, OCAD, and OCADU graduates in Drawing & Painting, Photography, Graphic Design, Printmaking, Interdisciplinary, Illustration, Experimental, Ceramics, Communications, Jewellery, Sculpture/Installation, Fibre and Material Arts.

This year’s distinguished jurors OCADU faculty member Barbara Astman, former OCA instructor John Inglis, and writer, cultural administrator and arts advocate David Silcox watched and made notes through three separate presentations of submissions. The first, a fairly fast paced run through, served to give the general feel of what our alumni spanning six decades of art making are producing. The second, where the initial choices of Yeses, No’s, and Maybes were made was followed by a slower deliberation and final culling of the Maybes. This part was the hardest and of course most interesting watching the jury debate for or against. On one point, however, the jury was unanimous: OCADU Alumni rock!

My thanks to OCADU Alumni Association President Maggie Broda and fellow exhibition committee members Josie MacLachlan and Sandra Henderson for their support and hard work and to Ozzie Ciliberti (Drawing and Painting, 1972), who produced the Exhibition Catalogue and designed OCADUalumni.ca:
A wonderful team.
